BE Like Billy

There’s a popular myth in golf — one that’s echoed on driving ranges, whispered among weekend warriors, and plastered across online forums: 


“I just want to be more consistent.”


But here’s the truth we’ve learned coaching thousands of everyday golfers at BE Golf:


The game doesn’t reward consistency — it rewards adaptability.


Just look at what happened this past weekend on the PGA Tour.

 

Billy Horschel, a seasoned pro, found himself in a nightmare spot: ball tucked up against a tree, no stance, and absolutely no chance to make a conventional swing.

Most players would have taken their medicine and punched out sideways.


But not Billy.


He flipped his club over, stood on the wrong side of the ball, and hit a left-handed shot onto the green. Left-handed. From an impossible lie. And he executed it better than most people do from their dominant side.


Now ask yourself: Was that shot luck?


No chance. That kind of shot only happens if you’ve trained for it — or at the very least, if you’ve developed the skill of variability.


Real Golf Isn’t a Repetition Contest.


Golf is not played on a perfectly flat range with no wind, perfect lies,  and unlimited mulligans.


The course is unpredictable.


Slopes, tight lies, buried bunker shots, awkward angles, and pressure-packed moments make every swing a new challenge.


So why do so many players practice by hitting the same 7-iron to the same target over and over again?


If you only train for sameness, you won’t be ready for the randomness.

At BE Golf, we preach what we call “game-like training.” 


That means using random practice, shot variation, and imaginative challenges to replicate the unpredictability of real play.


 Want to hit it better on the course? Stop trying to repeat the same motion robotically — start mastering a range of ball flights, trajectories, and lies. Don’t train to groove a single swing. Train to create shots.

 

How to Train Variability Like a Pro

 

  • Change targets every swing. This mimics how you actually play.

  • Hit one club to different distances. Learn to control trajectory and speed.

  • Curve the ball both directions. Challenge yourself to “see” shapes before you swing.

  • Practice odd lies. Bare dirt, sloped lies, tight turf — find them and learn to own them.

  • Flip the club upside down. Yes, even try the occasional left handed shot. Billy did.

 

The goal? Become skillful, not just consistent. As we say in the BE Golf book: “Golf perfection is a myth. Adaptability is the real skill.”
